Amazon.com essential video sun speckled heart, a young man (Robert Redford, in soft lighting) emerges as perhaps the best baseball player anyone has ever seen. On the way to the majors, shot down by an enigmatic black widow (Barbara Hershey) and vanishes for many years. When it reappears, a silent mystery, he lands somewhere in the New York team and begins breaking the league – is still natural. Fans of the Bernard Malamud novel will be affected by the mythical nonsense in this film, but baseball fans have been able to see and rewatch it, it is designed as a sort of shrine to the national pastime. Barry Levinson (Rain Man) directs the film with an unflinching devotion to the game, although the movie could use more of the realities of snuff and chewing pine tar. Redford is fine, and Kim Basinger and Oscar-nominated Glenn Close are effective in the women in his life. On top is growing, the extraordinary music of (more…)

Amazon.com When Roman Tribune Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is sent to Jerusalem, one of its tasks is the crucifixion of Christ. Marcellus, a cynical, hard man, wins the robe Jesus wore to the crucifixion, while playing with other Roman soldiers during the dying Savior. He later becomes convinced that his hallucinations and outbreaks of violence are the result of a curse received from the mantle, which is now in possession of his escaped slave, Demetrius (Victor Mature), somewhere in the Middle East. We must find Demetrius in order to destroy the robe and the curse of faith and is instead converted to Christianity. This was the first movie to be filmed in CinemaScope, and won an Oscar in 1953 for costume design, art direction and decor set. The visual aspects of the film is fantastic, and it's worth and just for that, but the script and the quality leaves much to be desired and does not find inspiration in these areas if (more…)

Amazon.com Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns is a comedy taken to the nth level. Brenda (Angela Bassett) is a single mother struggling to raise his family in Chicago. When receiving a letter urging the funeral of her father, she is not sure how to feel: Brenda never knew the man and had not interacted with the family. But when she loses her job, she decides that now is the time to shake things up. (And, as suggested by a friend, there is always the possibility that her father left some money.) While the film's central character grew with incredible difficulties (a prostitute for a mother and a pimp of a father who is not imminent), writer-director-actor Perry takes every opportunity to inject a little humor in the cartoons. Not her fault that she is very beautiful and majestic to be credible in the role, but Bassett – a great dramatic actress – is sorely miscast here in a role where her subtleties are lost in all the fuss. Meet the Browns is not (more…)

Amazon.com lightweight mystery novel Gregory McDonald's about an undercover reporter cracking drug ring police is transformed by screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, and writer / director of the first and Honeymoon in Vegas) in a very sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle. The enjoyment of the film pivots on whether it is frivolous Chase, Smart-ass brand of verbal humor funny, or simply selfish. If you do not like Chase, there's really worth seeing anyone else (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play IM "Fletch" Fletcher, an investigative reporter whose cynicism and disillusionment independent view on life mirrors the understated approach to comedy actor. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to take a number of people, because your job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of the humor of the movie centered on the absurd idea that any of those fake accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone . These are not (more…)

Amazon.com director Harold Ramis is tilted away from Groundhog Day side of his personality and courage Caddy Hack page to the Year One, a broad comedy set in ancient times or so. Timeline crazy film puts two cavemen wandering (Jack Black and Michael Cera) through a rapid-fire series of events biblical Cain (David Cross) killing Abel (Paul Rudd), Abraham (Hank Azaria) prepares to hit his son Isaac (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), all converging in Sodom, Genesis, corresponding to Las Vegas. Jokes Weird ranging from religious references Apatow ready for testicular gags, but most of the real humor comes from the efforts of artists to put things across. Black and Cera could not be more different in style, but each manages to evoke some laughs just by working on your computer: you can see Black exuberant extrovert of jumping all the material as a Golden Retriever in need and also enjoy the Wax whispering wall (more…)
